Can I get Engaged if I’m not Divorced?

Earlier this week, reports emerged of former marketer Nicolette Watkinson who, following her having logged on to Facebook, discovered that her husband had remarried in the Gambia. Nothing unusual about that, you may think, until you realise that her and her husband were still married, that is.

Marrying one person whilst you are still married to another is known as bigamy and is a serious crime that carries a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment. Yes, I know, you’re now thinking ‘but people start new relationship whilst still married all the time. They aren’t arrested.’ And you’d be right, there’s nothing illegal about starting a new relationship with, or even getting engaged to, someone else whilst you are still married to your spouse. Though we would recommend that you separate from then first, though – it’s only fair!
